Eye on the Guy: Alan B. Stone and the Age of Beefcake
The Archives gaies
du Québec invites
you to two benefit showings of Eye on
the Guy: Alan B. Stone and the Age
of Beefcake.
Documentary / 49
minutes. A film by PHILIP LEWIS and
JEAN-FRANÇOIS
MONETTE
Alan B. Stone was
a cultural pioneer. Long before Calvin
Klein’s poster
boys marched into public view, he was
taking erotic photographs of men and
running an international mail-order
business from his Montréal basement.
Eye on the Guy:
Alan B. Stone &
the Age of Beefcake explores the little-known
world of physique photography –
a scene that paved the way for gay liberation
– through the work of one of its
most creative figures.
An engaging and
elegant blend of cultural history and
portraiture, Eye on the Guy reveals
the legacy of an unsung master
– an arresting kaleidoscope of
images ranging from sexy beefcake to
lyrical scenes of rodeo life.
Former models recall
the heyday of Stone’s
studio, fitness magnate Ben Weider traces
the roots of physique photography to
the postwar bodybuilding movement,
and friends and family remember the
enigmatic man himself.
Resilient in the
face of a lifelong illness, Stone possessed
a wanderlust that took him to destinations
near and far. His photos captured the
urban beat of Montréal in its last
days as the nation’s
metropolis. He also left a rich pictorial
record of the Canadian West of the 1960s.
Adventurous, gifted, inventive –
Stone was always curious, his camera always
handy … and his eye always on the
guy.
