The
Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, supports
the Outgames, Montréal and GLISA!
Montréal, 8 September
2005 – The Mayor of San Francisco,
in a letter sent last week to the Mayor of Montréal,
GLISA and the Organising Committee of the 1st World
Outgames Montréal 2006, gave his support
to the largest LGBT sport event in history and
wished the city and the Outgames great success.
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors also unanimously
issued a proclamation recognising and honouring
the Organising Committee of the Outgames.
“We understand that you were
founded to orchestrate a magnificent worldwide
gathering of tens of thousands of lesbians, gays,
bisexuals, transgenders, and heterosexuals from
nearly 100 countries to celebrate sports and culture
together as one, and we applaud and support your
extraordinary efforts in bringing this endeavour
to life,” wrote Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Brian Jung, leader of Équipe
SF 2006, an all-volunteer group of Bay Area athletes
and artists who are organizing themselves to come
to the Outgames next summer, was delighted by
the support of the Mayor of San Francisco. “This
will inspire residents of San Francisco and Americans
in general to go to Montréal. It will be
THE gay destination in 2006.”
Thank you for your inspirational
leadership, vision and commitment to the global
LGBT community, and for upholding a tradition
of acceptance, diversity, support, celebration,
inclusion and equality for all, concluded Mayor
Newsom in his letter.
