A Documentary On The 1st World Outgames Montréal 2006
In the Works Since January 2005
Montréal,
8 June 2005 – “In November
of last year,” Ms. Louise Roy, CEO of Montréal
2006, announced today, “we came to an agreement
with Productions Virage, to produce a documentary
on the 1st
World Outgames. This film has been in production
for almost 6 months and will showcase athletes
from different countries, their dreams, their
training in preparation for the Outgames and,
for athletes in certain countries, the challenges
they must overcome because of their sexual orientation.”
VIRAGE
Productions
Virage is one of Québec's foremost
documentary production companies. Founded in 1985,
Virage now has a repertoire of over 50 films,
many of which have received awards. The company
has earned a reputation for producing exceptional
documentaries on major social issues targeting
a wide viewing audience. Virage continues to produce
the work of major Québec filmmakers, from
veterans to bright new talent.
Virage has built a solid reputation
for creating bold, quality productions, never
hesitating to explore controversial or delicate
subjects. Its list of films shows a definite propensity
for the defence of human rights, the rights of
women and those of various minorities, visible
or otherwise.
Virage’s films, in both Québec
and in Canada, have enjoyed unprecedented box
office successes for documentaries and their international
reputation continues to grow significantly.
THE FILM
The documentary currently in production
in Brazil, Europe, Asia and North America will
be screened during the Outgames in 2006. As well,
a “making of” version of the documentary
will be aired during the weeks before the Outgames
on Radio-Canada, Canada’s national public
broadcaster.
More than simply a report
on sports, Virage and Montréal 2006 have
agreed that the documentary should also examine
the political and human problems facing gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgender individuals when they
decide to fully and openly live their lives, without
lies and without shame. It is often through participating
in sports that LGBT individuals “come out
of the closet”. It is also through the practice
of sports that gays and lesbians living in countries
where LGBT rights are constantly marginalized
or threatened that they can find a safe environment
to be who they truly are.
