Edition of Rendez-Vous in the Village: Another
great success with more than 45,000 visitors!
Montréal,
4 September 2005
– The third edition of the Rendez-Vous in
the Village, organised 11 months before the 1st
World Outgames Montréal 2006, was a great
success from start to finish. More than 45,000
Montrealers came down to the city’s Gay
Village, where Sainte-Catherine Street was closed
to automobile traffic, to take part in activities
that were offered over two days. This year’s
“dress rehearsal” for next year’s
Outgames was launched on Thursday evening at the
Chalet de la Montagne during an elegant cocktail
dînatoire that welcomed 800 guests to the
sounds and flavours of Montréal.
“Eleven months before the
Outgames and we can happily say, ‘mission
accomplished’,” said Ms. Louise Roy,
CEO of the 1st World
Outgames Montréal 2006. “This weekend’s
event has shown just how much the community is
behind us. More than 150 people from around the
world were here as our guests this weekend so
they could see the kind of top-notch organisation
they can expect from the Montréal 2006
team. These guests will help us to spread the
word around the globe about the success to come
for next year’s Outgames.”
The Nuit
d'Or Gala
Almost 800 guests were at the Chalet de la Montagne
on the evening of Thursday, 1 September, for the
Nuit d'Or gala, for the official launch of this
year’s third edition of the Rendez-Vous
d’Or. Among the guests were Ministers Belinda
Stronach and Line Beauchamp, as well as Senator
Lucie Pépin and the Mayor of Montréal,
Mr. Gerald Tremblay, who made a moving speech
to open the evening’s festivities.
Activities
in the Village
The more than 45,000 Montrealers
who came to the Village for the Rendez-Vous enjoyed
demonstrations in a variety of sports disciplines
and cultural activities over the two days in everything
from beach volleyball to figure skating to performances
by the Ensemble vocal Extravaganza. The Village
merchants set up outdoor terraces and organised
sidewalk sales for visitors to enjoy as they strolled
down Sainte-Catherine Street.
