A Preview of the 2006 Outgames: Rendez-Vous dans le Village

Montréal, 27 August 2004 - With the support of Équipe Montréal, the Québec Gay Chamber of Commerce, Fondation Émergence, the Association of Village Merchants and Professionals, participating Village merchants and the Borough of Ville-Marie, the Village will be in festive form from 3 to 5 September 2004.

LA NUIT D'ARGENT GALA EVENING

"Ms. Michelle Courchesne, Minister of Relations with the Citizens and Immigration, and Mr. Gérald Tremblay, Mayor of Montréal, will co-host the Nuit d'Argent gala evening on Thursday, 2 September," Ms. Lucie Duguay and Mr. Mark Tewksbury, Co-Presidents of the 1st World Outgames Montréal 2006, announced today during a press conference.

The Nuit d'Argent will bring together some 700 guests next Thursday at the Belvédère in the Old Port of Montréal. Funds raised during this benefit evening will be added to those raised during last year's Nuit de Bronze, all of which will be combined with those of next year's Nuit d'Or, to fund a bursary programme for athletes to participate in the 1st World Outgames in 2006.

"I am proud to co-host the Nuit d'Argent evening, which is also a great show of community spirit," said Ms. Michelle Courchesne. "Organised to support the development of the sport movement, the event will also raise funds to assist athletes from disadvantaged countries to participate in the 1st World Outgames. These games symbolise the Government of Québec's commitment to the fight against homophobia, as well as its openness to diversity."

Representing the Mayor of Montréal at the press conference, Mr. Michel Prescott, Vice-president of the Executive Committee of the City of Montréal said, "Montréal is proud to affirm its support of the gay and lesbian community, which gives our city an image of tolerance and cultural dynamism from which we all benefit."

A CELEBRATION IN THE VILLAGE

Sainte-Catherine Street will be transformed into a vast playing field, animated by Équipe Montréal and several of its sports teams. The general public will be invited to participate in demonstration sports presented in the streets such as beach volleyball, bridge, billiards, soccer, hockey, wrestling, figure skating, basketball, badminton, Dancesport (competitive ballroom dancing), aerobics and swimming.

Many shops, bars and restaurants in the Village will host special activities and promotional events and many terraces will be set up on the street just for this exciting event. There will also be numerous prize draws throughout the programme of activities.
