On
20 June 2004, Montréal was the last stopover
for the Olympic Flame in North America.
It was a time for Montréalers to recall
the 1976 Olympic Games in Montréal, and
the city's Greek community welcomed the
Flame on the streets with Greek flags.
Those chosen
to carry the Olympic Torch for Canada
are all individuals who have demonstrated
the strength to overcome difficulties,
or people known for their achievements
and innovative actions. Hence the Torch
was carried by Marc Garneau, the first
Canadian in space, by astronaut Julie
Payette and by athletes and citizens who
have contributed to their local communities. Mark
Tewksbury, Olympic Gold medalist and
Co-President of the 1st World
Outgames Montréal 2006, was among them.
