MORE
"FIRSTS" FOR GLBT SPORT
Montréal
2006 is proud to announce that for the
first time in the history of GLBT sporting
competitions, FISA (Fédération internationale
des Sociétés d'Aviron) has registered
our regatta in its official international
calendar. In another "first", Skate Canada,
one of the most important national member
federations of the ISU (International
Skating Union) will sanction the Outgames'
figure skating competitions, including
categories for same-sex couples. This
happy news has been received with great
enthusiasm from skaters around the world.
SANCTIONS:
A STANDARD OF QUALITY THAT BRIDGES THE
GAP AND MAKES A DIFFERENCE
The sanctioning process
has been completed with the federations
governing the various sports. Sanctioned
sports ensure that Outgames competitions
will conform to the norms, rules and standards
of mainstream national and international
sport federations. When the governing
body of a sport agrees to sanction an
event, it provides technical expertise
to the organisers, and the event is registered
on the official calendar for that sport,
maximising the event's visibility on the
national and international sporting scene.
Usually it is mainstream,
rather than GLBT, sporting events that
receive official sanctions from recognised
sport federations. That is why the sanctions
obtained for the 1st World Outgames are
so important to the GLBT sporting movement;
in the battle against homophobia in sport,
sanctioned sports represent a bridge between
the mainstream and GLBT sporting communities.
For the local sporting
community, sanctions from recognised federations
give local clubs the opportunity to network
with national and international organisations,
and allow them to benefit from various
services offered to clubs (like training
for coaches and officials, for example)
so that they can develop and grow. The
sanctioned sports in the Montréal 2006
programme can serve as a model for future
World Outgames, and for GLBT sporting
events in general.
For athletes participating
in the 1st World
Outgames, this means that Montréal 2006
will have access to technical expertise
from recognized and trained individuals,
including access to experienced, competent
officials for Outgames competitions. These
officials attend regular clinics and training
sessions and are on the forefront of the
latest changes and developments in their
respective sports - in fact, they are
often key decision-makers within their
federations with regard to the evolution
of their respective sports. Their participation
ensures us of high-quality competitions
that meet the highest standard of excellence.

| A
Successful Visit to Paris |
|
| |
|
|
During an international tournament
in Paris held from 28 to 31 May 2004,
the city of Montréal was proudly represented
by a delegation composed of 9 members
of the LASCAR volleyball league, our two
Parisian ambassadors, Gaëlle Luc and Murielle
Fouet and our sport coordinator, Éric
Pineault. The group made a great impression,
particularly during the tournament registration
evening, during which they collected the
names of over 600 people who became Club
Montréal 2006 members and who are
planning to register for the Outgames.
The
delegation also visited most of the competition
sites and, thanks to their charisma and
dynamism, they were a big hit during the
official tournament reception evening
at Élysée Montmartre. They rounded up
their visit to the City of Light by attending
the closing brunch for the tournament
at the Espace des Blancs Manteaux in the
company of many European athletes. This
visit was a resounding success, demonstrating
once again the strong ties that exist
between Quebecers and our European cousins.

Right to Be Different |
|
| |
|
|
The first meeting of the international
scientific committee members for the "Right
to Be Different" Conference took place
in Montréal on 30, 31 May and 1 June,
chaired by Ms. Joke Swiebel and Mr. Robert
Wintemute. A press conference was held
on Monday, 31 May with the Mayor
of Montréal, Mr. Gérald Tremblay and the
members of the scientific committee. The
work on the conference has just begun
and the following themes were defined:
- The essential rights
- The global issues
- The diverse GLBT community
- Participation in society
(including education, work, the family,
the media and sport)
- Creating social change.
At the end of the summer,
the preliminary programme for the conference
will be announced.
We are also happy to announce
that the three major Quebec and Canadian
union federations, the CSN, the CSQ and
the FTQ/CTC, have become partners in the
conference, which will include a financial
contribution. As well, the Ministry of
Citizen Relations and Immigration of Québec
has officially added another $35,000 CAD
for this year to the $50,000 CAD
it already contributed to the conference
this spring.
