AFFILIATION
There are no affiliation or membership requirements for this sport discipline, but affiliation with a WKF member organization is strongly recommended.

RULES

For Kumite the following protection is compulsory:

• Hand protectors (one pair red and one pair blue)
• Athletic supporter (groin guard)
• Gum shield
• White uniform (Neither too long nor too short. For details on attire, see the World Karate Federation website.)

Recommended but not compulsory protection:

• Shin pads

Protection permitted for women:

• Chest protector

Other protective gear is not permitted.

ANTI-DOPING POLICY
The 1st World Outgames endorses a healthy and fair approach to sports training and competition. Sport events in the 1st World Outgames are sanctioned by provincial, national, and in some cases, international sports governing bodies. In order to adhere to the rules of these sporting federations and to guarantee that the Outgames are run in a fair and just manner, GLISA and the Outgames have adopted the policy as set by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Consequently, all athletes competing in the 1st World Outgames must adhere to GLISA’s position on drugs in sport and may be required to undergo drug-testing. We encourage all participants to become familiar with this policy.
 
POLICY ON TRANSITIONED AND TRANSGENDER ATHLETES
The objective of the 1st World Outgames in this regard is to provide an experience where all athletes are able to compete in a safe and welcoming environment, without discrimination of any kind. Our priority is to find the appropriate balance to ensure that no person, regardless of their birth gender, is disadvantaged in athletic competition and at the same time that no person participating in the Outgames experiences discrimination.

GLISA and the 1st World Outgames have collaborated so as to develop a policy that reflects this balance. We encourage all participants, especially those who have identified themselves as ‘transgender’ in the registration process, to become familiar with this policy.

COMPETITION FORMAT
Two events will be presented during competitions: Kata and Kumite (combat).

Kata Events
For yellow and orange, green and blue belts, Kata competitions will use a single elimination format.

For brown and black belts, the flag system will be used. Participants must perform a different Kata in each round.

All participants must present the following forms of traditional Kata:

• Shotokan
• Wado-ryu
• Goju-ryu
• Shito-ryu

Kumite Events
The tournament will consist of an elimination round with repechage or a round robin if fewer than six participants are registered in a given category.

Participants (WOMEN and MEN) will be separated according to the following divisions:

REFEREES AND OFFICIALS
All officials are members in good standing of the World Karate Federation or one of its affiliates and have been approved by Karate Québec.

Three to four competition areas are available in order to have a warm-up area available to participants at all times.

Physiotherapy and Massotherapy

In partnership with the Fédération québécoise des massothérapeutes and Kinatex Sport Physio, the 1st World Outgames is pleased to offer physio and massotherapy services in the following locations:

• Parc Jean-Drapeau
• Centre sportif du Parc olympique
• Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard
• Square Viger (massotherapy only)

These services will be available to volunteers and spectators at special rates.

ACCREDITATION
During the accreditation, participants from Canada will be required to show government-issued identification with a photo. For athletes from all other countries, a passport will be the preferred form of identification. Furthermore, every participant will be required to provide his or her participant number.

RESULTS
Results will be posted at the competition site as well as on the web site of the 1st World Outgames.

MEDALS
Every participant in the 1st World Outgames Montréal 2006 will receive a participation medal. In addition, athletes who finish in first and second place in each event will receive gold and silver medals, and the two winners of the repechage will each receive a bronze medal.
