5
Best Gay Travel Destinations for 2006
by Daniel Drolet
December 2005
1. Montreal
The city will host the 1st World
Outgames between July 29 and Aug. 5 — and
thousands of people have already signed up to
participate. This will make the Outgames a huge
gay and lesbian sporting and cultural event. The
world will be coming to Montreal.
2. The Baltic
Latvia? Who knew? "We're still
seeing a lot of interest in Scandinavian countries,
but also the Baltic — just because they
are seen as being new and trendy," says Greg
Kozdrowski, managing director of Rainbow High
Travel in Toronto. "There are great club
scenes in Latvia and Lithuania, so they are interesting
destinations for more edgy vacationers."
3. Buenos Aires
Costa Rica is getting an increasing
number of gays and lesbians -- particularly Quepos
and Manuel Antonio Park -- and Puerto Vallarta
on the west coast of Mexico is still party central,
but the new hotspot in Latin America, says Kozdrowski,
is tango town, Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina.
It's big, it's got year-round appeal, and it's
only a short hop away from the Uruguay beach resort
of Punta del Este, which is starting to attract
a gay crowd.
4. Barcelona
Greece still gets a lot of action,
and Paris and London are standards, but the popular
place in western Europe next year will be Spain,
and in particular Barcelona.
5. Fort Lauderdale
Forget Key West and South Beach
-- the top sun spot in the U.S., says Kozdrowski,
is Fort Lauderdale, Florida. And if you want something
closer, there's Philadelphia. The city has created
buzz with its catchy ad campaign, "Get Your
History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay,"
and a combination of major artistic events and
Benjamin Franklin's 300th birthday are keeping
the city on the radar for 2006.
The Next Big Thing?
"Every destination goes through
a phase where it's hot and it's not," says
Kozdrowski. "The next really big one, I think,
is going to be South Africa."
